Remove filler and redundant interface copy to keep UI text purposeful and direct.
Use this when
You are writing, implementing, or reviewing user-facing interface copy and want to ensure every visible string earns its place. No Useless Copy catches labels that restate their headings, decorative text that fills space, leaked implementation terminology, and redundant recovery instructions.
Not the right fit for shortening technical documentation or ordinary prose. This is specifically about product interface copy — the strings your users see.
How it works
No Useless Copy applies a systematic review contract to every visible string:
Identify the scope — Inspects the rendered surface and its accessibility tree. Enumerates all user-visible strings affected by the current task.
Test each string — For every string, asks four questions: Does it communicate state, required information, or an action? Does another nearby element already communicate the same thing? Is it product language, or did an internal name leak into the interface? Would removing it make the task, consequence, recovery path, or accessible name unclear?
Remove or rewrite — Removes strings with no unique user-facing purpose. Rewrites strings where the purpose is valid but the wording is vague, duplicated, or implementation-shaped. Preserves copy that carries a distinct function: field labels, accessible names, validation messages, consequences, safety warnings, and genuinely necessary next steps.
Fix error patterns — Ensures error messages state what failed with a safe reason, include a next step only when the interface doesn't already present the recovery control, and never turn errors into generic encouragement or expose raw provider errors.
Verify completions — Confirms every visible string has a distinct purpose, no label merely restates its heading, no decorative copy entered the product interface, and required labels, warnings, and accessible names remain intact.
Inputs
- A product interface — the UI screens or components to review
- The source code — where the copy strings live
Outputs
- Cleaned interface copy with filler, repetition, and leaked implementation text removed
- Preserved functional copy: labels, warnings, accessible names, and necessary instructions
- Improved error messages that are specific, safe, and paired with clear recovery paths
Prerequisites
None. Works with any framework or UI layer.
Installation and use
No Useless Copy is available as an agent skill. Point your agent at it during UI work:
Read the No Useless Copy skill and review the copy in this interface.
The skill respects product terminology, localization, existing brand requirements, and necessary instructional copy. Technical identifiers are preserved in developer tools when users need them for their work.
Example
"Review the copy on my sign-in and profile screens."
The agent inspects the rendered screens and finds: a "Identity / Profile" breadcrumb that restates the heading below it (removes the redundant line), a "Identity / 004" label exposing an internal code (removes it), and a "Couldn't sign in. Try again." error that doesn't identify which method failed while the retry controls are already visible (rewrites to name the failure and removes the redundant retry instruction). Functional labels, accessible names, and the actual recovery buttons remain untouched.
